The writer Shakespeare, shows his beliefs in fate ruling the lives of people through his plays. In his play,“The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” it shows a great example of his belief on how fate rules over free will, and that belief is put into the characters in the play. Firstly, Shakespeare uses foreshadowing to show his belief on how fate rules the lives of people in “Romeo and Juliet”. For example, in the prologue it said, “A pair of star-crossed lovers”. The term star crossed lovers definition is how two lovers are fated to meet but end in a tragic way. Shakespeare himself wrote the prologue and put the words star-crossed lovers in it. Romeo and Juliet were portrayed as fated to meet but end up tragically, it was always meant to happen because they were star crossed lovers as said in the prologue. In the play during Act 5 scene 1, Romeo said “Is it e'en so? Then I defy you, stars!” This shows how Romeo is a believer of astrology and fate. He wanted to defy the stars when he heard the news of Juliet dying, he planned on defying it by killing himself. Romeo didn’t know Juliet was actually alive because of fate and so dramatic irony was in this scene. Everything that led up to this was from their fate as star crossed lovers, as said in the prologue written by Shakespeare. Dramatic irony being in the scene and fate led to the ending of the star crossed lovers.
