Brandon Lee, period 1 Mr. Cooney 4/10/23 The Fate of Romeo and Juliet As humans experience love, it is in fate’s hands to choose whether their love shall stay or vanish. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the protagonists are star-crossed lovers. The term star-crossed lovers implies that the affection between two lovers will end in tragedy. Due to fate, Romeo and Juliet were never meant to be together. Fate constructs a path by putting obstacles in the way of Romeo and Juliet, such as a feud between the two families, a message not getting delivered, and an unfortunate mistiming that leads to their predetermined destiny of not being together. After Romeo is told that Juliet is dead, he goes to an apothecary and asks for a drug that could kill a man. Romeo proceeds to give him all his money for the drug. When Romeo arrives at Juliet’s tomb, he drinks the drug that he had obtained from the apothecary after he is done talking to Juliet’s corpse. The drug’s symptoms hit quickly. Romeo kisses Juliet, then perishes: "Thy drugs are quick. Thus a kiss I die" (Shakespeare V.iii.120). The quote demonstrates that when Romeo notices Juliet is dead, he cannot continue life without Juliet being with him, so he drinks the potion to be next to her for the rest of his life. Juliet wakes up, noticing that Romeo has passed away. Juliet kisses Romeo, hoping there are remains of the drug left on his lips, hoping to die, "O churl, drunk all, and left no friendly drop/To help me after! I will kiss your lips. Haply some poison yet doth hang on them/To make me die with a restorative (he dies) (Shakespeare V.iii.168–170). This quotation shows that if Romeo had waited longer for Juliet, she would have woken up and would be with him, but he drinks the potion before she wakes up, which causes Juliet to want to die too.
