Romeo & Juliet Argument EssayDo you believe in fate? In the two well-known tragic plays of Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare and “Pyramus and Thisbe” written by Ovid, the characters all have a dramatic downfall leading to their deaths. Many people question if their downfalls could have been avoided simply by making better choices, but it is obvious that the star-crossed lovers were destined to fall in love and tragically die. Romeo & Juliet and Pyramus & Thisbe’s fate was destined within the stairs. To start, an example from Romeo and Juliet is when Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love despite their two families hating each other, this proves that fate started the whole thing and is more at fault for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. …show more content…
forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.”(1. 5. 44-53) It was not a choice to fall in love with someone on the opposite side of the fued, it was just meant to be. Another example is when, the letter to Romeo from friar Laurence got delayed and didn’t end up making it to him. The letter probably would have made it to Romeo, and then he would not have killed himself out of sadness and grief but instead he would have waited for Juliet to wake up, and then Romeo and Juliet could run away with each other. “I could not send it-Here it is again - Nor get a messenger to bring it thee, So fearful were they of infection.” (5. 2. 14-16) this quote from Friar proves fate's meddling in this tragedy and how sickness is playing the role of fate. Based on these examples from Romeo and Juliet, it is clear that fate is playing a substantial role in Romeo and Juliet and negatively altered the paths of their lives. Furthermore, in Pyramus and Thisbe there are a couple of events that fate plays a role in. The first one is when a lion appears, “But of a sudden she saw by the light of the moon a lioness.” (Ovid 488) the lioness appeared as Thisbe was waiting for Pyramus to show up at their secret meeting spot, this is fate playing a role as the untimely arrival of the …show more content…
Convenience that could only be labeled as fate is how Pyramus and Thisbe’s bedrooms were side-by-side.“Semiramis, in houses so close together that one wall was common to both.” (Ovid 488) this quote depicts just how close the rooms were together. The wall that they shared even had a hole in it, so they were able to communicate as they were growing up, and this is just one more way that fate affected Pyramus and Thisbe’s life. on the other hand, personal choices to some extent have altered the path of these two stories. Some will say that if Romeo had waited a little longer to kill himself, or that Juliet's plan was silly and never going to work in the first place, but both these notions would have worked out if it wasn’t for fate's unfortunate timing. If Juliet had woken up when Romeo arrived there or before Romeo arrived there, Juliet's plan probably would’ve worked out, but the fate's timing was just unlucky. A quote from Romeo and Juliet talkies about Romeos unsettling feelings “I fear, too early; for my mind misgives Some consequence yet hanging in the stars Shall bitterly begin his fearful date With this night’s revels and expire the term Of a despised life, closed in my breast, By some vile forfeit of untimely death.”
