Fate is the power that determines the outcome of events in life. Whatever power an individual possesses in their free will cannot change destiny. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, it tells the story of two young lovers from rival families. Their attempts to stay together lead to their deaths. William Shakespeare, in his tragedy Romeo and Juliet, uses dramatic devices to highlight how characters contributed to Romeo and Juliet’s deaths in order to convey of how hurrying will result in poor endings. The protagonist may be the hero and is usually the character the audience identifies with. William Shakespeare, in his tragedy Romeo and Juliet, uses the protagonist to accentuate how Romeo contributed to his and Juliet’s death in order to convey how impulsive actions lead to negative consequences. In Act 3, scene 1, Mercutio had been killed by Tybalt in a duel. After the duel, Romeo says, “This day’s black fate on moe days doth depend / This but begin the woe others must end” (III.i.117-118). Romeo believes that the death of Mercutio is to be blamed on fate. This quote signifies how Romeo is naive to the consequences of his actions. In the play, Romeo’s tragic flaw is his impulsive behavior. Romeo is a young man with little control over his emotions, and these emotions to control his behavior. Romeo does not accept the consequences of his impulsive actions. For example, when he killed Tybalt after the death of his friend Mercutio, he blamed fate. Romeo was banished from Verona as a result of the murder of Tybalt. A happier ending to the play might have occurred if Romeo had refrained from his impulsive thoughts.
