The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a book filled with romance, drama, and action, a true classic from the Elizabethan era. In the streets of Verona, an ancient feud is reborn between the Capulets and Montagues. After coming to Capulet’s party uninvited, Romeo, the only son of Montague instantly forgets Rosaline, his previous love interest, as he sets eyes on the beautiful Juliet, the only daughter of the Capulets. The two secretly get married the next day, with the help of Friar Lawrence and Juliet's nurse. Many tragic events follow, which bring sadness, banishment, and finally, the death of six characters which sadly include our star crossed lovers. An example, is when he asked Juliet to promise she would marry him, in an exchange of vows, similar to a proposal, only hours after they met. Another example of his impulsiveness was when he committed suicide after seeing Juliet “dead”, though she woke up only a minute later. The following quote shows his one of the first examples of his carelessness, which precedes numerous other events that dramatically changed the story. “I fear too early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars shall bitterly begin his fearful date with this night’s revels, and expire the term of a despisèd life closed in my breast by some vile forfeit of untimely death but he that hath the steerage of my course, direct my sail.” (I. iv. 113-190). Romeo states this in the scene before the party. He feels it is not a good idea to go, and yet goes, telling himself that it his destiny, and he will let it happen. The phrase “fearful date” relates to the foreboding tone that reigns over the rest of the rest of the story because of his actions. It could also refer to the fact that his dating, and love affair with Juliet led him to his death.
