Mina Kimes once said, “No one drives through life with blackout windows; most of us are affected, in some way or another, by the love and hate we encounter in others” (qtd. in “Love and Hate). Everyone in life goes through emotions and naturally occurring feelings when they are affected by events and conflicts in their lives, no matter how isolated someone is. Shakespeare portrays this quote accurately in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet due to love and hate both having such a big influence on the people of Verona. Tybalt Capulet argues with the Montagues at the very beginning of the play: “What, drawn and talk of peace! I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward” (1.1.65-66). Tybalt, representing Juliet's family, expresses negative connotations towards the Montague family by engaging in conflict with Benvoilio who is a Montague. Juliet’s family, the Capulets had always engaged in conflicts between the Montagues throughout the whole story causing more tension between the families. After Romeo and Juliet's death, the Prince announces to all the Montagues, “See what a scourge is laid upon your hate” (5.3.292). The Prince is showing the Montagues that their hate of the Capulets has caused many unnecessary conflicts between the two, to the extent of losing their own beloved children. Romeo's side of the family has also encountered deaths, such as Mercutio, simply due to the hatred that is served between the Capulets and the Montagues. In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet had both shared the same hatred of families that in all cost them both lives of precious relatives and even their
