Who is more mature when it comes to love, Romeo or Juliet? What does it mean to be mature? Maturity is defined as able to face up to the consequences of your actions. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, which tells the story of two star-crossed lovers, the question that still lingers today is who is more mature when it comes to love, Romeo or Juliet? The hopeless romantic or the practical idealist? Of the two main characters, Juliet is more mature when it comes to love. This can be seen when Juliet obediently agrees with her mother to accept Paris’ love and marriage without hesitation, and when she hesitates to confess her love for Romeo too quickly. This can be seen when Lady Capulet informs her of Paris’ marriage proposal and Juliet says that she has never even thought about marriage, but that she will consider Paris as a potential husband if her parents wish her to. “It is an honor that I do not dream of.” This quote shows that she is being respectful towards her mother by saying it is an honor but yet she doesn’t think of it. She doesn’t immediately dismiss the idea, but instead agrees to keep an open mind and consider him as a potential husband. This shows her maturity and respectfulness towards her parent’s wishes. That can be seen when Romeo asks Juliet to marry him during the balcony scene. “I would be satisfied if we made each other true promises of love.” While Romeo does propose to Juliet very quickly, it is still a serious commitment that he is aware of. He did not ask Rosaline to marry him even though he was madly in love with her. That signifies how much stronger and deeper his love for Juliet is. Furthermore, it shows a degree of maturity on Romeo’s side, as he is proposing a practical solution to their love, rather than simply indulging in romantic fantasies. By proposing marriage, he is acknowledging the risks and challenges of their relationship, and he is willing to take responsibility for his actions.
