In addition Shakespeare uses words with positive and peaceful connotations such as “ nice” , “gentle” and “calm”. This shows how Benvolio was painting Romeo as innocent in the quarrel whilst letting others know that Tybalt couldn’t be dissuaded from violence. Furthermore the audience is shown that Benvolio doesn’t mention that Mercutio also goaded Tybalt on due to his loyalty for his friend, this may have made the audience at the time question how honest Benvolio actually is as he is leaving out key details. Also Benvolio exaggerates Romeo’s peace making by repeating things such as “bade him bethink”
Tybalt is a very hot-headed and violent character, in every scene he appears a fight breaks out or is about to break out, while Benvolio is peaceable and longs for an end to the fighting. When the audience first meets Tybalt, he instigates a fight between Capulet and Montague servants. In the same scene, Benvolio calls for Tybalt to “beat down” the swords and make a peace. Tybalt replies saying, “What, drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word/ as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.
Benvolio did whatever he could to stay away from trouble and getting into fights. He says “The day is hot; the Capulets abroad; / And if we meet we shall not ‘scape a brawl, / For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring (Shakespeare III. i. 2-4). This shows that he tried to stay away from fighting with the Capulets because he knows Romeo is in love with a Capulet.
Throughout the play, we noticed that he believed in keeping the peace and he did not like to fight. “I do but keep the peace; put up thy sword or manage it to part these men with me” (I.I.58-59). In this part of the play, Benvolio is asking Tybalt to help him get between a fighting men and put an end to it. Therefore, he clearly has good intentions and is one of the good guys. Another thing, Benvolio is a good friend and cousin to Romeo.

The close friendship between Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio manifests into destructive love. When Tybalt calls Romeo “a villain”, Mercutio fights him and dies. Romeo is filled with grief and anger as evidenced in the quote: “And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now!” Romeo never fights, but when he does, his impulsive actions result in violence which is “wild” and irrepressible. Shakespeare’s use of fricative alliteration highlights Romeo’s aggressive behaviour, which foreshadows the forthcoming event.
Most people know the fight between Mercutio and Tybalt from the author, William Shakespeare, but they never heard from Benvolio's point of view. As Mercutio and I were walking in the village, I had a sense that something was going to go wrong. I had this feeling because it was hot and Mercutio gets a little angry when he has been in the heat to long. From my point of view i also saw the truth that when Mercutio said he was hurt i felt it wasn't a joke because he was acting to hurt for it not to be true. Bevolio is trying to persuade Mercutio to leave because, if the Capulets are around, there would be trouble I pray thee good Mercutio let's retire. Benvolio is used by Shakespeare as a peacemaker, he will not argue or upst anybody andwill not side with anyone as he is neither Caulet or Montague, he is, hever, Romeo's friend.
He shows immense care for his cousin Romeo when he tells him that he will keep trying to get his mind off of the woman that he fell in love with, but doesn’t love him back. If Benvolio didn't care for Romeo, he wouldn't have his life revolve around Romeo´s. He never seemed to have any problems of his own, but whenever Romeo got in a bad situation, Benvolio was there to support him. For example in act 2 scene 1 Benvolio says: “ Come, he hath hid himself among these trees / To be consorted with the humorous night./ Blind is his love, and best befits the dark” (30-32). That quote took place after Romeo, Benvolio, and Montague attend a Capulet party to find Rosaline, but instead Romeo falls in love with Juliet.
Benvolio is fully aware of how close the two families are to breaking out into a full out war with one another, and knows that this skirmish could easily be the start of it if he allowed the fight to continue. Him intervening shows how he has to act as the peacekeeper in order to keep things from escalating any further between the families. Another example is when him and Mercutio are talking in the streets at the end of Act 2. Here, Benvolio brings up that Tybalt has sent Romeo a letter challenging him to a duel. Mercutio remarks, “Alas poor Romeo!
Benvolios appears in the play in the very first act and scene where he is talking to Lord and Lady Montegue about Romeo and how he is feeling down and depressed. Immediately, Benvolio asks why that is and becomes concerned for his dear cousin. After hearing this, he goes to talk to Romeo and find out why he is depressed. This act and scene demonstrates that Benvolio is a caring and thoughtful character in the play and puts others before him. In Act 1 scene 4 when Mercutio and Tybalt are going to fight, the only person who is trying to be logical and have reasoning is Benvolio.
He says he wanted to keep the peace, but he always was ready to fight when Tybalt was around. Especially when Romeo will not fight Tybalt, Benvolio states, “Oh calm, dishonorable, vile submission! /Alla stoccata carries it away. [Draws his sword]/ Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?” (Shakespeare 530).
To try and prevent a fight Romeo tries to talk Mercutio out of fighting “Gentle Mercutio, put thy rapier up” (Shakespeare 3.1.81). this relates to the reason that Romeo's little words are just not enough to stop anybody. When they do fight Romeo tries to break it up. “Draw, Benvolio; beat down their weapons. / Gentlemen, for shame!
Benvolio doesn’t do anything wrong and all he does is good. Romeo and Juliet are two young people who are dumb because they think they fell in love after less than a day of knowing each other. The characters in this story are dumb because they try and get married after one

It is so relatable till date because people fall in love now as Romeo and Juliet did, families fight, as the Montagues and Capulets did. We can relate to each character in some. Which is what makes this play so compelling and lets it live, five hundred years later. Romeo and Juliet is a tragic tale of two lovers, separated by an epic feud of their two houses (Romeo a Montague and Juliet a Capulet.)
