In 384-322 BCE, there was once a Greek philosopher named Aristotle. The towering figure made contributions to fields like math, english, science, politics, agriculture, and a lot on theater. He wrote two hundred treatises, and from this, thirty-one of them survived. Devoting his time and effort into his work, he influenced authors to write great books. Of these authors was the famous William Shakespeare. William used one of the disquisitions which was tragedy. This tale that readers go through connects to the great philosopher, Aristotle’s, definition of tragedy being the downfall of a character resulting in pity and fear on the audience.

Juliet was introduced as a strong character while Romeo was represented as a crybaby and suicidal. They are as opposite as the colors black and white. During the balcony scene, Juliet was telling Romeo that he needs to marry her so he should change his name. She ordered him, “Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name, which is no part of thee Take all myself.” The quote proves how Juliet was shown as in charge and confident in the beginning of the book. Later on when Romeo dies, Juliet feels lonely, as if she was stranded in the middle of the sea. Due to this, she suddenly says, “O, happy dagger, This is thy sheath. There rust, and let me die.” From this, we understand how her suicide was an unthinkable action. The two quotes show a difference and change in character from the beginning to the end. Romeo and Juliet, the protagonists, are known for having their forbidden love. Of course, their families do not approve because of the feud that they have. Later on, Romeo and Juliet both commit suicide which causes the family to deeply suffer. This results in the feud ending between them. When Romeo and Juliet are found dead, the watchman declares, “And Romeo dead, and Juliet, dead before, Warm and new killed.” This quote shows the two protagonists are found dead which relates to Aristotle’s definition. Anytime a young human being takes their life because of unhappiness, a person feels regret and misery and fear for what will happen next to the family and those who loved them. For example, when my brother’s roommate committed suicide, my brother felt remorse because he felt he could have done more to help had to known his friend was suffering. This pity and remorse is similar in Romeo and Juliet because the families also had to suffer. To make the best of what they had done, the families wanted to end the feud. After seeing their children dead, Montague said, “But I can give thee more, For I will raise her statue in pure gold, That whiles Verona by that name is known, There shall no figure at such rate be set As that of true and faithful Juliet.” This quote demonstrates how the suffering came to relief.
