Throughout Romeo and Juliet, the readers witness the characters Juliet, Romeo, Friar Lawrence, and Mercutio expressing different forms of love for Romeo. These forms of love include familial, romantic, and platonic love. It becomes evident that love holds immense influence over the character's lives and choices, proving itself to be the most prominent force of nature. Despite love's ability to overcome pain and hardship, this play raises the question: what sacrifices is one willing to make to adhere to love's demands? This is his way of telling Romeo to enjoy the Capulet party, and to look for new love prospects. Mercutio's encouragement attempts to lighten Romeo's mood and to not let him fall back into depression. Another example of Mercutio's love for Romeo is his willingness to fight on behalf of Romeo, resulting in his and Tybalt's unfortunate deaths. Despite Tybalt’s claim to have no dispute with Mercutio, he still intervenes to protect Romeo. Mercutio defends him because he knows Tybalt is a strong fighter and views Romeo as emotionally vulnerable. When Romeo enters and Tybalt says that Romeo is the one he wants to fight, Mercutio says “but i'll be hanged sir if he wears your livery (3.1. 58)”. The sand is a sand.
