The word selfishness is defined as a person’s excessive or exclusive concern with oneself. A person’s selfishness can destroy relationships and even lives, and this is precisely what occurs in William Shakespeare’s tragic play Romeo and Juliet because of the thoughts and actions of Friar Lawrence. It is a tragic love story where the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet, are supposed to be sworn enemies but fall in love. Due to their families' ongoing conflict, they cannot be together, so they kill themselves because they cannot cope with being separated from one another. Out of all the characters in this play, Friar Lawrence is most to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths because of his tragic flaw of poor decision making; furthermore, his behavior illustrates that people should mind their own business. In Act 5, Scene 2, he feels so guilty at the end which means he knows he's to blame. He worryingly utters “Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, the letter was not nice but full of charge, Of dear import, and the neglecting it May do much danger. Friar John, go hence. Get me an iron crow and bring it straight Unto my cell” (5.2. 20). He uses the phrase “Much danger” because he realizes what he has done, and now needs to try and fix it. He then tells Friar John “Get me an iron crow” so he can now uncover Juliet and wake her up before Romeo thinks she is actually dead. As one can see him not getting the message to Romeo is now adding more to the plan that was not supposed to occur. Now when Romeo sees Juliet dead since he did not know its Friar Lawrence’s fault.
