Main themes of Romeo and Juliet In a story, there are many different themes portrayed. The themes are there for readers to understand the feeling and true meaning behind the author’s reasoning. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, there are many different themes that can be found, including, the power of love, the power of hatred, and courage. The power of love is the most often seen theme in this play. Love can be a violent, ecstatic, and an over powering force. Throughout the play, love effects Romeo and Juliet more than anything else. It makes them think the only way to do things are in drastic measures. Love makes them defy their families and risk losing those who care for them because they are showing disobedience. “ Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or remember if thou wilt not, be sworn my/ love, and no longer be a Capulet,” (Shakespeare, act 2, scene 2, line 37). The power of love not only affected them, but the people all around them. Romeo and Juliet wanted to be together so badly, that it made them take their own lives. The first act of hatred displayed in this play, is the unsettled vendetta the between the families. Their hatred for each other is so severe, if they ever got into an argument, it would be a blood bash. The amount of hatred between the Montegues and the Capulets has even caused death. Many crucial characters have died all due to the vendetta between them. Mercutio was killed all because Tybalt was angry at Romeo for coming to their family party. “A plague o both your houses, I am sped,” (Shakespeare, act 3, scene 1, line 58).
