Every day young men are told to “suck it up” and “walk it off” when they are hurting. This toxic view of male emotions is commonplace in today’s society. This societal expectation of men having no emotions is simply not true, 20 percent of men say that they experienced a time of sadness and depression and didn't reach out for help. This secrecy around emotions is driven by this accepted toxic masculinity. So instead of reaching out, they lie to people about their feelings, saying they're fine when they are not. In Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juilet, Romeo portrays a stereotypical teenage boy as he is depressed, disconnected from his parents and secretive, like most teenage boys, which led to his untimely death. A common issue in our society is that “Men are less likely than women to believe they might have depression, to act depressed in the conventional perceptions of appearing "down" or "blue," or to seek professional help for depression.”(Rothfeld/Romaine ). Males are shown to act less depressed and fake smiles than be a burden around others. These males would rather hurt themselves mentally then get the help they need because of their pride. Teenagers are lying to their parents about their mental health. These young teenage boys are embarrassed to admit their feelings and tell their parents what's happening to them. Kids and teenagers are lying to their parents about their life “However, the teenager has more developed language and is more adept at managing his or her independence to operate in stealth mode. The teen sets out exploring and at times, that exploration leads to drugs and alcohol use.” (Direnfeld). Young men today tend to lie, resulting in their parents being clueless about what's going on in their lives.
