¨Love is like a jigsaw puzzle. You see the perfect image on the box, but few people complete it without trouble”(Ryan Lindahl). Examples of tragic love include Romeo and Juliet, Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, and Antony and Cleopatra. The three all endure some form of tragedy whether is it death or separation. The combination of tragedies create a story that is very sad and heart breaking, usually ending in the death of both lovers. The elements of tragic love are loyalty, rivalry, and love at first sight. Loyalty is a common characteristic displayed in many tragic love stories. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo's servant Balthasar traveled to Mantua. He told Romeo that Juliet had ¨committed suicide.¨ Romeo decides his life is unbearable without Juliet so he buys poison from an apothecary and drinks it next to Juliet in her tomb. Before Romeo drinks the poison in Act V Scene 3, he toasts to his love and exclaims ¨Here is to my love! [Drinks.] O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. This with a kiss I die. [Falls.]¨ (Shakespeare, Romeo. V. 3. 122-123) Loyalty is a common characteristic of tragic love because Romeo wanted to be with Juliet forever. Shah Jahan was a prince from the royal family. He went to the stalls (marketplace) and was welcomed by many upon arrival. He chatted with friends and occasionally looked at the pretty women sometimes hidden by veils.
