I based my transformative text around the main concept of Romeo and Juliet’s love story as it is the basis for the play and a key concept. I chose to mainly focus on the party scene which is act 1 scene 5, the balcony scene act 2 scene 2 and other aspects in short like their marriage and their eventual death acts. I chose these scenes and aspects as they were the most instrumental in building the relationship between Romeo and Juliet, and also developing the idea of fate and star crossed lovers. Fate plays a large role in the original text, Romeo and Juliet are referred to as star crossed lovers in the prologue, The term star crossed lovers means opposed by the stars, in Shakespeare’s time they believed the stars played a role in our fate. By changing the format of my text I was able to add a new insightful perspective on Romeo and Juliet’s relationship, I decided to contrast this in my transformed text by having the magazine writer and ‘gossip gurlies’ (which are people from the community of Verona who send in tips about Romeo and Juliet) believe the relationship to be fate often quoted saying “Romeo and Juliet’s love really was destined, written in the stars and fate it may seem that these two lover’s stars are aligned.” I also used descriptive imagery of Romeo and Juliet’s meeting to help the readers picture the intensity of their relationship. Whilst Shakespeare uses descriptive imagery in the original text it is in the form of Romeo’s speech, so only his view on the matter is portrayed whereas in the transformed text I was able to look at act 1 scene 5 from an outside perspective and comment on the overall atmosphere generated.
