As the saying goes, “true love at first sight,” fills the deepest desires of many, but is a reality for only a handful of partners. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is a spontaneous teenager who belongs to the House of Montague. At the drama’s start, Romeo feels tenderness for Rosaline, a beautiful girl, and cousin of Capulet. Despite Romeo’s affection toward Rosaline that remains unmatched, he still believes he could acquire an extraordinary fondness for anyone else, to the same extent as his desire for her. Romeo’s infatuation with Rosaline drastically weakens the credibility of his love for Juliet. The infatuation he has with Rosaline reveals his character traits. Romeo has a deep passion for Rosaline at the start of the play, and claims, “this love feel I, that I feel no love in this,” (Act I, Scene i) in regards to the endearment he feels towards Rosaline, even though he receives no devotion from her in return. The Montague boy acknowledges the one-way relationship but continues to possess a desire for Rosaline because he trusts his valid love for her, and hopes she will eventually feel the same. To further extend upon his justifiable adoration for Rosaline, Romeo agrees to crash the Capulet’s masque with Benvolio, “ so I [Romeo] can see the woman I love,” (Act I, Scene ii) at the party. Not only does Romeo exemplify his devotion toward Rosaline multiple times, but he also takes an extreme risk; arriving unexpectedly at his enemy’s celebration to see her. By declaring his love for Rosaline, Romeo shows his legitimate endearment for her. Nevertheless, the audience doubts his next sweetheart’s credibility. The ambiguity of this new significant other begins upon Romeo releasing his tenderness for Rosaline in a heartbeat, occurring once he sees Juliet. Moreover, Romeo's crush on Rosaline lasts momentarily, but he still claims an extensive passion for her.
