Film scene analysis-
Written in the 1950’s, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy about two star crossed lovers that end their lives for love. Over 30 film adaptations have been made of William Shakespeare’s remarkable production. Two of the most well-known film versions are Baz Luhrman’s 1996 and Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptations. Both films execute the story from a different perspective of the directors. The alteration in time period caused the evolution of Romeo and Juliet to be different to each other. These dissimilarities are found in the costumes, lighting, camera angles, dialogues and several other key features. Both films use different types of camera angles to express the scene. The two films use a lot of close up shots when Romeo and Juliet first meet and make eye contact. This shots helps emphasise their emotional state about each other. Both films express Tybalt’s appearance using different camera movement and angles. In Baz Luhrmann’s version, while Juliet dances with Paris, the scene quickly cuts into a close up shot of Tybalt 's furious face. The shot then zooms out to reveal two men on either sides of Tybalt. However, in Zeffirelli 's film Tybalt is introduced through a middle shot during his dance. The part where Juliet and Romeo realise they are enemies have definitely been enhanced when comparing the two films. Luhrmann’s adaptations shows a close up shot of Romeo and as he realises she is a Capulet, the camera zooms out showing Romeo’s heartbroken face. Romeo’s helpless face stands out with the cheerful and excited guests in the background as the camera zooms out. A high angle shot is used when Juliet looks down at Romeo after she realises Romeo is a Montague.
