Person A claims to have a good reputation. He gets bad grades in school and does not follow any given set of rules whatsoever. Not only does he suggest that an individual’s reputation is important, he also shows that a family’s reputation is just as important. For example, when Romeo and Juliet first spoke while Juliet’s family was near, Juliet exclaims: “Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much, / Which mannerly devotion shows in this, / For saints have hands that pilgrims’ hands do / touch, / And palm to palm is holy palmers’ kiss” (Shakespeare 1.5 97-99). If Juliet wouldn’t have taken this precaution, and someone had caught her and Romeo together, she could have ruined the Capulet family’s good reputation. This precaution benefits Romeo and Juliet because the two were each cautious with what was going on. They both knew that they could’ve been caught at any time. While a family’s reputation is important, an individual’s is just as important. When Sampson and Gregory meet up with Abram and began goofing around, Sampson suggests, “Nay, as they dare. I will bite my thumb at them, / which is a disgrace to them, if they bear it” (Shakespeare 1.1 37). Many people hide their true identity to protect themselves from getting into trouble with others, which can have many negative effects as well. For example, Lickerman states, “Our reputation represents the way others look at us and as such is at once critically important and utterly trivial.” Not only does this shows how people can be judgemental, but it shows that people are known to hide their identity to hide their actual reputation so people would think differently of them, especially when their true reputation is not one they are really proud of. Some parts of society can equally agree that a good reputation shows a person’s independence as a person alone. In an article written by Karsten Strauss, she stated: “...a positive reputation is ‘the essence of leadership.’” Going into deeper thought, a bad reputation can destroy a person’s life. Depending on the strength of the reputation, it could put someone in a good or bad situation when it comes to how they live their life. Putting this all into thought, a reputation really defines who someone is as a person. Lickerman also states, “A good reputation shouldn't be an end in itself but rather a natural outgrowth of your striving to be the person you most want to be.” A reputation should not be based off of someone who does not influence others greatly.
