Religion in Rome was always known to be polytheistic (worship of different gods). The Romans were always very superstitious in their belief, the believed that everything around them has a god watching over it, people included. Rome has always been known for their indebt and intense religious society. Their religious society and their political office were always hand in hand. Julius Caesar was the Pontifex Maximum known as the highest priest before he became part of the consuls and he was also seen as a god and was worshipped as so too. Like the Greeks, the Romans worshipped a pantheon of gods and goddesses and each of the gods worshipped has a separate duty to perform and different days for worship. They person that succeeded him was Augustus and he carried on the practice of Julius Caesar. When Rome started to grow, the worship of different gods didn’t become the only religion. The worship of gods was not the only religion that Rome had, some of the Romans also believed in the religion of Cult Worship, the had cults like – Bacchus, Cybele, Isis, Sarapis, Sibyl, and some other imperial cults. The leaders tolerated some while some were not taken, Roman accepted some the cults in Rome for the people to worship while at the same time the declined the worship of some cults too, because they were feared by the leaders and also the believed some of the deities had dangerous potentials. Roman religion always had a strong moral dimension, the always believed in doing the right thing, been honest with things and people, keeping oaths and agreements by simply shaking hands. They early conversion to Christianity in Rome encountered a lot of difficulties. Christianity spread around Rome during the worship of their different gods but the believers spread it around the romans to believe. Their refusal and of not worshipping the gods and sacrifice to the gods made the leaders and non-believers see the Christians as the cause and birth of bad luck for them. They first few people that started off Christianity were mainly the poor and the slaves before other people joined. The poor and the slaves joined Christianity because they believed that the Christian life was a life of equality. The poor and slaves didn’t have equal right in Rome during the time of Julius Caesar. Rome has two different hierarchy of equality, the patricians and the plebeians. The patricians were the highest people and they consuls and leaders were always from the patricians, they plebeians didn’t have that much right in Rome and not equal way of life with the Patricians, while the slaves then were seen as the untouchables. Christianity coming to Rome gave the romans the believe of equality which they all wanted. Christians were persecuted in few centuries AD and they were also punished, often with death.
