Roosevelt: Roosevelt was president of the United States at the time. He supported a foreign policy that would draw America into the war. He supported the allies openly back when America wasn’t as open to a large scale war. He fought political opposition from Senators and people of the opposite party who were in office. During and before the beginnings of America entering the War, Roosevelt was on his third Presidential candidate, since the limit of 2 was an unwritten rule at the time. Roosevelt would have a positive association for the boys because he their president and has been leading them through this. He would be one of the first people that Phineas would write to about enlisting. He is a president, and the commander and chief, which means we have a person who could grant him is wish of being able to join up. Then, Gene would positively associate the President with his country, since he is portrayed as being the more vocal patriot of the two boys, since for the majority of the book Phineas was very forthcoming about him not believing in the war anyway. It was her that rallied the Japanese as the U.S. started their first invasion . Overall, I would be surprised is the boys positively associated her with anything. The boys would see her a threat to the country and less of a good. The would likely think that she would be a negatively associative persons. Since she has led the opposing armies, this would seal the deal for Gene. But, Phineas would see here as a possible candidate to help him enlist. I think this because of the quote sometime in the book that said that Phineas was even sending letters about signing up with other groups and join the Axis as long as that meant that he could be a part of this war. Still, Phineas might see her as an enemy due to her strong leadership position with the Japanese
