Story: “A Rose For Emily” (1931) Author: William Faulkner (1897-1962) Central Characters: Miss Emily Grierson, a quiet woman who mainly kept to herself at home. Other Characters: Tobe, Emily’s longtime servant. Homer Barron, the man she poisons and locks his corpse in a room. Jude Stevens, sprinkles lime on her yard every night to get rid of the stench in her yard. Setting: in Mississippi at Emily’s house around the Civil War era. Narrator: Faulkner Events in Summary: (1) When Miss Emily’s father died, Colonel Sartoris remitted her taxes but as years when by the new mayor tried to tax her and there was no record of her taxes being remitted. (2) There was an old man that the narrator knew and was intrigued with the old mans pale blue eye. (3) The narrator decided he wanted to kill the old man. (4) The narrator watched the old man at night for a week to see when he should kill him. (5) On the eight night he decided to kill the old man. (6) The old man awakes in his sleep frightened and the narrator watched him quietly. (7) The narrator began to hear what sounded like the old man’s heartbeat. (8) He feared a neighbor would hear the heartbeat because it was so loud. (9) He kills the old man and dismembers his body and hides the parts under planks of the floor. Style: The story was written as the narrator was trying to explain his state of mind while actually being mad and using a lot of expression throughout the story. Irony: The most ironic thing that captured my attention was denial. The narrator starts off the story denying he is mad but as the story continues the readers learn he actually is mad. Theme: I believed the idea of guilty conscience was the main theme in the story. With the old man’s heartbeat into play I think that drove the narrator to confess (a.k.a his conscience). Symbols: the old man’s eye. The narrator took a fancy to his eye and called it the Evil Eye. Evaluation: I relate the story to Poe’s actual life, and how he became mad after his wife died.
