Rex and Rosemary’s Parenting Style The parenting style that most exemplifies Rex and Rosemary Walls in The Glass Castle is Cherry’s idea of uninvolved parenting because they have few demands, low responsiveness, and little communication but also reject or neglect the needs of their children(Cherry, “The Four Styles of Parenting”). Rex and Rosemary Walls are uninvolved parents because they neglect the needs of their children. In the book The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls, says “I was wearing the dress to cook hot dogs” (9).
Walls Parenting Style In the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, the Walls parent use permissive parenting style, they have little rules, being more nurturing and communicative, and strive to be their friends. As I read the book, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, I discovered how unfortunate other people’s lives can be. The four Walls children; Lori, Jeannette, Brian, and Maureen, all learned how to take care of themselves and each other. Their parents, Rosemary and Rex Walls, weren’t always there to help them when they needed it most. Based on this, I have realized that the four children yearn for freedom rather than safety. The narrator, Jeannette, admired her parents, especially her father.
The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls, tells a story about a dysfunctional family and the hardships they faced in what we call the journey of life. Throughout the book, Jeannette Walls re-encounters her favorite childhood memories spent with her father, Rex Walls, in spite of Rex's recklessness and destruction onto different parts of her life. Rex is a skilled electrician whose alcoholism often gets to the best of him and his decisions. His profusion of alcohol led his family to poverty because instead of paying off bills and buying necessities for survival, he spends most of their income on liquor. Therefore, his children lacked the simplest things such as food and clothing.
When you first hear the title of “The Glass Castle” written by Jeannette Walls you may think it's a book about fairy tales. However that’s not the case, imagine not being able to experience childhood the way it’s supposed to be with toys, friends to play with, and parents when they come home from work cook a huge family dinner. This is the case for Jeannette Walls. She is the second oldest of four children and grew up needing to take care of freewheeling, creative, but neglecting drunken father Rex who could never keep a job and oblivious mother Rosemary who was an artist. Jeannette is the main character in the book and tells of her upbringing and how dysfunctional her parents were. She explains the many struggles her siblings went through, how it impacted all of their lives, and how she grew up to be a successful person. This is a constant struggle in the Glass Castle because of the Walls poor living condition, but eagerness to explore and adventure the world. Rex and Rosemary Walls, parents of Lori, Jeannette, Brian, and Maureen, obviously take an exploratory and learning environment over a comforting living space. Although living in rough conditions, which leads to bullying, poverty, I believe that it was more important that the Walls created circumstances for most of the children to explore and enjoy learning. In the memoir, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the Walls family is considered homeless and they are constantly moving from place to place. They constantly find themselves either with a somewhat decent amount of money or at times, no money at all. Jeannette, being one of four children always follows along with and listens to her parents and eventually notices that their family does things very differently than most other families. As Jeannette explains her childhood and how she is being raised by her parents, it is clear to see how different Rex and Rosemary’s parenting style is compared to the parenting style of other parents. Since their parenting style is so different, it seems that it affects their children in a negative way throughout their childhood, but in the end it makes Jeannette become a better and more successful person.

The Glass Castle is an adventurous story that reveals the painfully miserable story of Jeannette Walls. A selfish mother, a careless father, and terrible social encounters- these are some of the elements of a harsh reality Rex and Rose Mary Walls failed to shield their children from. Growing up poor was already difficult, but growing up with a selfish parent, specifically an unfeeling mom, made life hell for the Walls children. The family barely had one source of income from Rex Walls, and instead of helping out with the family’s finance issues, Rose Mary spent her days at home painting.
In The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, it tells about how the Walls family move to different desert towns, settling in for as long as their father, Rex, can hold a job. However, his perspective of the state and society, and his alcoholism led them to move frequently. This lead to the theme, sometimes you can be mature and responsible at a very young age. Parents are required to make crucial decisions about how to raise their children in order to guide them through the inevitable obstacles and hardships of life. In The Glass Castle, many would argue the lack of care and responsibility the Walls had for their children. The author, Jeannette Walls, uses Rex and Mary Walls to demonstrate that their strong traits of non-conformity, self-sufficiency and perseverance are passed on to their children, allowing them to develop to their full potential.

Although there are some problems in this story that she encounters in her early years, she uses these problems to better herself for what may lay ahead of her. I am writing about what I think of her parents, Rex and Rose Mary Walls, and if they are acceptable parents, or inadequate parents to Jeannette and her siblings Lori, Brian, and Maureen. I, however, do not agree that Rex and Rose Mary Walls are acceptable parents.
In “ The glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls, Jeannette was the main support in the Walls home. Growing up in a household where her father was an alcoholic and a childish mother, she finds a way to leave the nest with her siblings and become a successful adult. Initially, Jeannette was soft spoken and mature for her age, however over the course the course of the novel she spoke her mind and became successful and independent. In the beginning of the book, Jeannette was well behaved and acted mature for a three year old.
