Introduction:
One exclusive artist of our tenure is Roy Fox Lichtenstein. He was born October 27, 1923 in New York, New York- died September 29, 1997, New York City (1) (2). Mr. Lichtenstein was noticed as a pioneer and Illustrator painter that continued to bring forth different favors of art for our viewing. His artistic venue dealt with pop art, a movement that countered the techniques and ideas conceived of Abstract Expressionism and images taken from popular cultures. Lichtenstein took great pleasure in presenting well-known comic-strip figures in a fine art format. He had increased the size of his artworks and utilized graphic and linguistic conventions of comic strips dealing with variety genres as romance, war, and science fiction. In the style of comic strips, he used words to express sound effects (1).
He also, had developed a detached, mass-produced effect by outlining areas of primary colors with deep black lines and using techniques that replicated an engraved dot pattern (1).
(Subject Matter) Roy Lichtenstein’s famous pop art painted in 1963 was known as the Whaam! The pop art itself was described as a powerful and uncanny modern version of the battle paintings that historically decorated European palaces and council chambers. It is on a grand scale, divided across two panels that together measure more than four meters in width (4).
(Forms and Organization) Roy Lichtenstein’s illustration the Whaam portrayed an American fighter unleashing and firing multiple rockets at the enemy’s plane and blowing it up, giving the pilot no chance of escape (4). It is a portrait that place emphasis on violence and visual literacy on “All American Men of War”. It is symmetrically balanced with a medium of graphite on paper.
(Style) Roy Lichtenstein’s painting created a more realistic comic book style, oppose to the common easel picture and mural.
