In the year 2050, a dystopian society depicts a future when Iindigenous peoples are victims of mass genocide. In The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, resilience is portrayed as a vital asset in the struggle against oppressors while characters are face to face with emotional and sexual abuse, andsimilarly it also displays the importance of resilience when characters finding aspiration when dealing with the recoil of death. When French’s surrogate younger sister, Riri, is killed by Lincoln, Frenchie is left to his own devices. As a consequence, he is disoriented and emotional which leads him to note that after killing a man and losing Riri, he has lost the ability to see a certain color and that the world seems dull. This symbolizes that despite retaining his dreams, Frenchie is just as disconsolate as the masses without dreams. Frenchie later regains some of his senses and thinks, “EVERYTHING WAS DIFFERENT. We were faster without our youngest and oldest, but now we were without deep roots,without the acute need to protect and make better. And I had taken up a spot that had opened up in the middle of it all, somewhere between desperation and resolve. (...) We moved the same as always, Miig as our leader, Chi-Boy as the scout, but now I was with them, helping shape our path forward.” (Dimalie #). Through this narrative Frenchie acknowledges Minerva and Riri’s death, saying that traveling has become easier although they are now without roots. The diction of the word “roots” is what shows how traumatic the loss really iswas for Frenchie’s group. The use of “roots” represents the fact that Riri and Minerva, prior to their deaths, were not just burdens to the group but the heart and soul. In the novel The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, resilience is a crucial element in the fight against oppression, this is shown when characters encounter emotional and sexual abuse and when they need assistance finding hope when navigating through grief. To sum it all up, It isit is irrefutable that the resilience of characters in The Marrow Thieves is superbly summarized in a quote by Robert Jordan when he says “Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it’s less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that's good.”. One must remember that life is full of hardships and that there will be easy and challenging times, but the only good choice is to stay resilient through it
