Throughout his many legal run-ins and his various clubs, Ruby met and allegedly befriended a number of police officers. According to reports, Ruby was deeply upset by the assassination, and soon after walked to Dallas City Hall, where Oswald was being transferred to the county jail. Ruby entered the basement area and shot him in the stomach at close range before being restrained. The event was captured live on television, thanks to the nearby media. According to an article from 1967 covering Ruby’s trial, half of the people questioned by the newspaper believed Ruby should not receive punishment for killing the killer of the president. Regardless, the jury reached a verdict of murder, and Ruby was sentenced to death. While in custody, Ruby claimed that he killed Oswald in order to spare Jacqueline Kennedy from having to testify at Oswald’s trial and that he had acted alone. This statement is supported by the Warren Commission. It's been speculated that Ruby was part of a larger conspiracy and that he had killed Oswald to keep him from talking. Such theorists often pointed to Ruby’s alleged ties to organized crime. However, he wasn’t the only one with connections in dark places. Kennedy had ties to his own shady group. There were even claims that the mob helped him get elected in the first place. What's more widely speculated is that his father worked with Sam Giancana, the head of the Chicago mob, in the bootlegging industry during the Prohibition Period. Giancana was supposed to appear in court, having claimed to have played a part in the president’s death along with the CIA, but he too was assassinated before he could talk. There are two supporting reasons for the theory that the mob was behind Kennedy’s death. The first is that members of the Chicago mob have come forward claiming to have been working with the CIA on the conspiracy. The second is related to Jack Ruby, who, similarly to
