In Lois Lowry’s book, “The Giver” rules and punishments are so severe that if the citizens are caught doing something bad they would have their legs beaten. The Committee of Elders made these rules. They say if the citizens get caught they get beaten in front of the whole community (p. 23). If the citizens do something bad they get released (p. 57). Everybody in the community, including the Committee of Elders, has done something bad before, and they now know not to do it again. In Jonas’ community you they rules and punishments which have both benefits and drawbacks. Some rules and punishments no bragging, and people can’t look at other people’s nakedness. They can’t cut in line anywhere. None of the nurtures can look at the babies’ names
