Everyone will have problems if they are selfish. In the story, “Rules of the Game,” by Amy Tan, Waverly learns how to play chess. She learned how to play chess from her brothers and got really good. She got good enough to where her mom wanted Waverly to focus on chess and only chess. However, Waverly let this get to her head and became more selfish. Waverly’s selfish caused conflict between her family and herself.
One conflict that she is having is how she fights with her brothers. One example from the story is, “Why does she get to play and we do all the work.” complained Vincent. ¨Is the new American rules,¨ said my mother. ¨Meimei play, squeeze all her brains out for win chess. You play, worth squeeze towel.¨ (120)

Her mom went back to the kitchen and started to make loud noises with pots and pans. When the noise stopped, Waverly could see out of the corner of her eye that her mom was standing in the doorway. Her mom made a hmph sound that came out of her tight throat.
When Waverly's mom was bragging about how Waverly is her daughter, Waverly asked her to stop. “I wish you wouldn't do that, telling everyone I'm your daughter,” Waverly said under her breath. ¨Aiii-ya. So shame be with mother?¨ She grasped Waverly´s hand tighter and glared at her. ¨It´s not that, it's just so obvious. It´s just so embarrassing.¨ Waverly said. (122)
