Support means help not control. In Amy Tan’s short story “Rules of The Game,” Waverly, the main character, has a mother that is trying to control her with her chess skills. After Waverly learns to play chess and gets really good, she decides to enter tournaments. She wins every game she plays. After Waverly’s mother finishes bragging about her daughter to a really good friend, she is left with a hidden surprise. Not only in chess, but in life, support is taken to the max and people may not react in the best way.

They live in San Francisco's Chinatown. Waverly and her siblings have a very boring life as their mother does not let them do anything. As Waverly gets older, she does more and more things in public. One night after arriving home from an activity, her mother was braiding her hair and asked “Ma, what is chinese torture?”(2). Waverly left her mother’s face stunned. Waverly’s mother has sheltered Waverly her whole life. She is scared that Waverly will get made fun of because she is Chinese. Since an anonymous person had told her about chinese torture she was not pleased with her daughters friend’s or the people that go to the same activities as her. Waverly’s mother starts to do more and more for Waverly. It is clear that she is Waverly’s favorite, and takes advantage of this, “Let me! Let me!” (3). Waverly would say when her mother would not give her something. She began to make her siblings life miserable; this is all because she knows her mom will give her anything she asks for. Waverly’s mother is this way to her because she wants her daughter to succeed at something. This would not be possible
