‘Where is Adelaide’s global centre?’ Rundle Mall Fieldwork Report Fieldwork Broadsheet Part 1. Introduction/Geographical Context: Globalisation is a term describing the act of interaction amongst a vast number of people, companies, and/or governments worldwide. On the 24th of May 2023, the year 9 geography class of Mr Roberts embarked on a fieldwork adventure in Rundle Mall. They delved into Rundle Mall, a renowned shopping precinct nestled in the Adelaide CBD, as depicted in Figure 1. Retail is a key factor of globalisation as these stores are often established overseas or source products internationally. This number compared to the other options is staggering, proving Rundle Mall’s globalisation. Food/Drink, the second highest scoring category, can be used to argue globalisation as food and drink are often influenced internationally, proving a range of cuisines. This states that Rundle Mall is globalised well based on this graph. Interestingly, Graph 4 contrasts earlier statements on Rundle Mall’s globalisation. This is because Australia is the most common source region for stores located in Rundle Mall. Thus, roughly 79% of shops are Australian based and only 21% originate from foreign countries. When referencing the legend, it can be found that there is a distribution of visitors from places in Australia that are not local. This presents that Rundle Mall is quite globalised, with the survey results presenting numbers from different states and territories of Australia. It can also be inferred that since tourists are visiting Adelaide, there is a draw factor to Rundle Mall. Conclusion/Evaluation: After analysing the data collected from the multiple graphs and maps stated before, a conclusion can be met on the globalisation of Rundle Mall. The group successfully collected data on the pedestrian count, shops, and surveys to discover the globalisation of Rundle Mall. This data was then put onto graphs, and later, onto maps. Hence, Rundle Mall can be categorised as quite globalised. This is because there is a high frequency of retail shops, and there are international shops and visitors from outside of Adelaide. However, not many shops had international roots and there were almost no visitors from outside of Australia. Furthermore, Rundle Mall can be classified as moderately globalised.
