The Rwandan Genocide

The Rwandan genocide was a horrific and evil event. According to the UN, “more than one million people are estimated to have perished and an estimated 150,000 to 250,000 women were raped.”un.org The Rwandan genocide started on Apr 7, 1994 – Jul 15, 1994. For context, Rwanda is a country in East – central Africa. The Hutus were the killers and the Tutsis were the victims. Learning about the choices people made during the Rwanda genocide helps us today by not allowing Human killings.
To provide some background on how it started, sources say they had hate before but it wasn't that bad. Hutus blamed Tutsis after the predicates plan was shot down they blamed Tutsis and started killing Tutsis in Rwanda.
This shows that if killing humans is allowed during a genocide they will lose a lot of people. The killings were massive, “During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, also known as the genocide against the Tutsi, members of the Hutu ethnic majority in the east-central African nation of Rwanda murdered as many as 800,000 people, mostly of the Tutsi minority.” (History.com) …show more content…

On “April 6, 1994, Plane Crash on April 6, an airplane carrying both Juvénal Habyarimana, the President of Rwanda, and Cyprien Ntaryamira, the President of Burundi was shot down. Both presidents were Hutu and were killed. The assassination was blamed on the Tutsi minority and immediately resulted in the use of roadblocks throughout the country and sparked the genocide. To this day, there is no conclusive evidence regarding who shot down the plane, but theories range from moderate Hutus to the Tutsi-led RPF”
