In this scenario we learned that Julieta is preparing for the SAT. She is a student who recently immigrated to the United States from Argentina and although she speaks fluent English, she communicates predominately in Spanish at home. During her tutoring session, Julieta’s tutor notes that she is constantly struggling with the reading and writing sections of the exam. When it comes to standardized test, Fairness is an important component implemented by the Standards of Educational and Psychological Testing. The concept of fairness to all test takers is foundational to the assessment process and deserves specific attention and evaluation. We know that Julieta is from Argentina and her score in the SAT can seriously be impacted due to group differences. The counselor involved should take into account her origin in order for the test to be valid. For instance, language is essential, Julieta speaks English but she continues to struggle with her reading and writing indicating that her level of understanding is not with communication but with comprehension and interpretation. The examiner should not assume that Julieta can follow proper test taking techniques or procedures, the fact that cultural differences are in play, where having a diverse background, different upbringing and language can seriously limit her chances of success.
