Demonstrate leadership and collaboration within interdisciplinary healthcare partners and professional, political, and/or regulatory organizations to support change in healthcare During my time at JU, I realized how important is was to be familiar with healthcare legislation. In the SCNA Legislative Priority presentation (Appendix 8A) I discuss one of the current priorities in legislation from the South Carolina Nurses Association (SCNA). The priority discussed in my presentation is the promotion of quality of life and health for all people. We had a discussion board assignment (Appendix 9A) in which we had to evaluate a leader that we worked with. I chose my current, but temporary manager. The point in this assignment that reflects me achieving this objective was when I stated, “Before I thought that all she cared about was the bottom line, but after what I have learned thus far, she is actually doing exactly what is needed. She is promoting cost effective, patient centered care.” (Adams, 2017, para. 2). I learned that if we use our resources wisely and efficiently, we will have funds left over. When this occurs, the hospital will be able to hire more staff, increase wages and/or purchase new updated equipment. All these results allow us to give better patient care. It isn’t just about pinching pennies, it’s about making sensible decisions and providing the highest quality of care to the community. When I realized this, it was truly an ah-ha moment for me. I started looking at the healthcare system and my role within it in a whole new way. In the assignment, Baby-Friendly Initiative (Appendix 9B), I present a plan to obtain Baby-Friendly designation for our facility. The plan considers many aspects, the customer, the purpose, the operations, the competition, the risks, the resources and the finances. When I did this assignment, I did not realize the significance of the financial aspect of creating a project plan. Whether we are looking at finances for becoming designated as Baby-Friendly or we are looking at finances in relation to direct patient care, it all comes down to the same concept. That concept is providing the highest quality and most efficient care for our patients. I think of finances daily as I care for my patients.
