Should STEM be prioritized in schools as it is, or should the arts and humanities receive more attention? In today’s society, STEM is held to a higher standard as many believe that it is required to become successful, however humanities and arts also contribute to considerable achievements. While STEM initiatives should continue to be encouraged, they would be more beneficial when studied alongside the arts and humanities, providing the success and essential skills heavily valued in society. Not supporting those humanities would be a disservice to students as “the humanities, arts, and social services [are] essential, both for educating great engineers and scientists, and for sustaining our capacity for innovation” (Source E). Clearly, the humanities have a positive effect on those interested in STEM as it sparks creativity and innovation. The humanities and the arts also present a way for individuals to expand essential creative skills: “The arts are a source of enlightenment and inspiration, and exposure to the arts broadens one’s perspective” (Source F). Additionally, the humanities and arts, educate students on real-life skills and lessons that set them apart in society, including “critical thinking skills that help them collaborate with people across the globe, as well as communication skills that enable them to listen, explain, and inspire” (Source E). Without the assistance of the humanities and arts, none of this would be possible. While the benefits of the humanities and arts in education seem to slightly outweigh the sole prioritization of STEM, it is unequivocal that STEM initiatives are an issue that warrants serious and nuanced consideration prior to schools choosing one over the
