This book is Hosea. He was an author. He was prophet of Northern kingdom of Israel. Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom.” In Northern kingdom of Israel period, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the LORD. Northern Israel people had an enthusiasm for sacrifice. The LORD said, “Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob; but you have been weary of me, O Israel! You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings, or honored me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, or wearied me with frankincense.” In that period of Israel, they were importing frankincense from other country for sacrifice. They were serving God formally. But God said to Israel, “You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings or honored me with your sacrifices.” Why God said that? Because even though they looked like a doing sacrifice, but they did not sacrifice on God’s side. The LORD said Israel, “For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” Some people will misunderstand this scripture that means God doesn’t like a sacrifice. God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. And book of Number said, “Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” Then, why God destroyed Northern kingdom of Israel and Southern kingdom of Judah? Before talking the answer, we have to know for LORD’s thoughts are not our thoughts, neither are our ways LORD’s ways.
