Quinn Retzloff Honors English 101 Mrs. Cyphers 10 October 2014 “ ‘ Comrades,’ he said, “ I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labour upon himself.’ ”(69) Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a novel that explains the injustice of the treatment upon animals overthrowing humankind. This parallels to the Russian revolution and the Communist Stalin who oppressed the people and took away their individual rights. This signifies of the targeting Stalinist Russia as a totalitarian country. Napoleon himself represents Joseph Stalin as he rules lavishly over the farm. This is an important trait describing Napoleon because it helps revolve the story and affects the way the farm animals feel about the new change of leadership. Using pathos, Napoleon so called’ “wins the crowd over”. He manipulates the stories to cover up the bad things which actually took place. For example, Squealer (which will be mentioned in the next paragraph) uses varying emotions describing the fate and death of Boxer when he realized that Napoleon sold him to a glue factory for money to buy alcohol: “It was the most affecting sight I have ever seen!”(124). This again leaves the animals in a state of calm. Napoleon also rushes behind the scenes to urge the people for his cause. The animals believe in him to do the right job, but then realize the trouble of leadership with hence forth. This trait affects the plot of the story because if emotions were not used to the farm animals, they would have rebelled sooner against Napoleon, knowing what exactly they have done. A few examples would be plans with Mr. Whymper and trading with the humans Squealer explained was a myth. Also, the banning of the Beasts of England was explained by the rebellion as being complete.
