Zaki Araujo Mr. Jacob Geography 7 The Sahara Desert Africa is one of the largest continents, Africa is also home to the largest desert in the world, the Sahara desert. The Sahara Desert is known for its harsh and brutal environment and in fact, it is one of the harshest environments. Due to its very harsh environments, it is near to impossible to live there. There are few resources that make survival in the Sahara possible. Things such as oases, rain, rivers, plants, and animals make it possible for people to survive in the extreme conditions of the Sahara desert and the Sahel. The Sahara brings along a harsh climate, in the morning the temperature soars “above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and at night temperatures drop below freezing” (pg 304). The temperatures in the Sahara are very extreme making it super difficult to survive in the Sahara. The Sahara also brings many “severe thunderstorms that blow sand everywhere…..and rain is very unpredictable. It many rain 3 inches in one spot and none nearby.” (pg 304). The Sahara desert has many harsh conditions such as these thunderstorms and rain also make it very difficult to survive there. In the Sahara, the rain usually never falls however when the rain falls somethings it can come so hard and wash away cars and homes. The oases in the Sahara desert “contain hidden water underground” (pg 304). The oases in the Sahara all provide water some are underground some above however they all allow people in the desert to have water in order to survive in the extreme heat conditions of the Sahara. Without the water provided from oases in the Sahara, life would be impossible in the Sahara desert. Desert oases in the Sahara are “an island with water…...larger oasis even contain thousands of palm trees lots of water” (pg 304). Furthermore, Desert oases have palm trees and usually are somewhat tropical in the sense that they provide water to the people of the desert helping them survive the extreme weather in the Sahara desert.
