ESCAPING SALEM: The Other Witch Hunt of 1692 In Richard GodBeers novel “Escaping Salem: The Other Witch Hunt of 1692” he tells of a witch trial that took place in Stamford Connecticut in 1692. GodBeer starts readers off with the setting taking place in Daniel and Abigail Wescots household. He tells of a dilemma going on in the household pertaining to their servant; Katherine Branch. She was experiencing hallucinated fits that caused her to convulse and scream in pain.
\The infamous Salem witch trials, you may have heard of them, but do you know about the famous event which many book, movies, and even its own T.V. show are revolved around. From June through September of 1692, nineteen men and women all been accused of witchcraft, were brought to Gallows Hill. Gallows Hills is also known as witch hill that is where they killed all the men and women accused. Now you may be thinking what they did that was so bad it’s just witchcraft, it was a common belief that people could pledge allegiance to Satan and become witches with supernatural power to harm others. The devil is the most vile and wicked being to ever exist. He is smart and cunning that he can take over a person’s body and turn them into a witch, giving them unimaginable powers. In 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, many of the residents believed in the devil and witchcraft. Soon their belief became stronger, as strange events started happening around the town. The Salem witch trial hysteria of 1692 may have been instigated by religious, social, geographic and even biological factors. During these trials, 134 people were condemned as witches and 19 were hanged. These statistics also include 5 more deaths that occurred prior to their execution date. It is interesting to look into the causes of this stain on American History, when as shown in document B, eight citizens were hanged in only one day.
Salem Witch Trials Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people. The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 were an example of a genocide. Women were accused of witchcraft with little to no evidence. These practices were not unlike those of McCarthyism. McCarthyism was a similar incident, in which many people were accused of being secret communists in the 1950’s.

It also shows that 76 out of those 110 women were married and were about the age between 41-60. It also shows a chart that shows the accusers and it states that a total of 29 women accused them and 23 of them were single and were about the age of 11-20 years old. When Abigail feels threatened by Betty Parris, everything changes, for one slip up of the truth could end Abigail Williams.
In Salem, Massachusetts, Puritans were strong believers in the Bible. The Bible states, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” The Puritans beliefs led to them accusing 20 innocent people of being a witch, this resulted in their deaths in 1692. Even though the Puritans couldn’t see it at the time, their accusations were really based off jealousy, lies, and Salem being divided into two parts. One cause of the Salem witch trial hysteria was jealousy.

Chaos broke out in 1692 among the Salem Village in the Massachusetts Colony. Several children began convulsing, shrieking, and having strange fits. The episodes were originally accredited to bewitchment from citizens in the colony. However, new studies were conducted and alternate explanations arose. Scientists discovered a fungus that can induce actions very similar to those described in the Salem Witch Trials.

Paranoia and fear fueled the wave of witch hysteria that swept through the quiet Salem village. An execution of the hanging of fourteen women and five men that were accused of being a witch was a result of the Salem witch trials. In addition, “one man was pressed to death by heavy weights for refusing to enter a plea; at least eight people died in prison, including one infant and one child; and more than one hundred and fifty individuals were jailed while awaiting trial” (Latner). The Salem witchcraft trials was caused by a number of religious factors.
Salem, Massachusetts, USA and occurred between February 1692 and May 1693. Over 150 people were arrested and imprisoned and even more accused; but not pursued by the authorities. 29 were convicted of witchcraft but only 19 were hanged. The best known trials were in the Court of Oyer and Terminer.

The Puritans established their colony because they wanted to practice their religion freely. The Puritans were a "City on a Hill" because they thought they were the model city and everyone would look up to them. But in Spring of 1692, everything escalated with talks and accusations of witchcraft in Salem.
