Out of all the characters in the book, there are many that contributed to the hysteria of the witch trials, however, of these characters Abigail Williams contributed the most. In the beginning of the play, we see Abigail and a collection of other girls dancing and making a charm in the woods. Abigail made this charm in order to kill Mr.Proctor 's wife. If Abigail wasn 't so crazy in love with John this scene in the woods probably wouldn 't have taken place. Therefor, Parris would have never caught the girls and there wouldn’t be rumours of witchcraft.
In January 1692, Abigail and Betty began to have fits, violent contortions, and screamed. The local doctor believed they were bewitched and soon afterwards, other young girls also began to have similar symptoms. Abigail and Betty accused Tituba, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborn for bewitching them. Sarah Good and Sarah Osborn refused to confess meanwhile Tituba confessed and claimed that there were other witches working with the devil. The hysteria began to spread and other young girls began to have fits and accused even the outstanding members of the community such as Rebecca Nurse of being witches.
Did you know that historians believe that the reason why the girls (accusers) had “fits” was because of bacteria in their rye bread that may have caused hallucinations? The Salem Witch Trials occurred from 1692 to 1693. During the trials, twenty people were executed: nineteen hanged and one pressed to death. The reasons for the deaths of these moral Puritans were the absence of life outside of church, fear, and strict interpretation of the Bible.
Abigail accused many innocent people of witchcraft and she also told lies about the people she thought were witches. She made her accusations very believable for the judges to put innocent people to death. In conclusion, I say Abigail Williams was the most to blame for the events of the Salem Witch Trails. Her character flaws of dishonesty, envy, and lust costed many innocent people their lives and left survivors of the Salem Witch Trails wretched
In The Crucible, there could be many suspects to blame for the innocent deaths that happened in Salem. Proctor could be blamed for the innocent deaths because he lied about his affair with Abigail. Speaking of Abigail... in my opinion Abigail Williams is the one to blame for the innocent deaths because of the lies she told, the accusations she made, and the affair she had with John Proctor. Abigail Williams told many, many lies in The Crucible. The reason the witch trials began in the first place was because of the lie she told about being in the woods.
The Crucible Analytical Essay In the play The Crucible, Arthur Miller tells the story of the Salem witch trials taking place in Massachusetts in the very late 1600’s. The character Abigail becomes a known liar throughout the story by telling other that she sees the devil and makes accusations towards others about performing witchcraft. The story is an excellent example of lies multiplying. If a person lies, they will eventually create more lies because of the first.
By examining the characters of the play, I believe that the three major characters who should be blamed the most for the witch trials are Abigail Williams,
Abigail The Victim In the Crucible many are to blame for the events that occurred, but one of the one’s who seems to take blame the most is Abigail Williams. She holds most of the responsibility because she was to blame for the girls meeting with Tituba in the woods. When Parris located the girls in the woods, Abigail tries to hide her behavior because she fears that it will uncover her affair with Proctor if she confesses that she attempted to cast a spell on his wife, Elizabeth. Abigail also lies to avoid being punished for witchcraft.
Though there were many people who contributed to what happened in Salem, I believe that Abigail Williams was mostly to blame. I think this because she lied to save herself, made up false scenarios and blamed innocent people, and enjoyed the attention and power. In the beginning of the play, Abby is caught dancing in the woods. She herself drank a blood charm in which she wanted to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Though Abby wasn’t the only one who was caught, she lied to Reverend Parris so that she would not be hung once witchcraft was being talked about throughout the village.
What does it mean to be a victim of society? A victim of society can more or less be defined as someone who is harmed by their surrounding environment. However, being a victim of society is not nearly as it seems as people may easily play the victim in order to manipulate others, and that scenario holds true in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. In this play, a crisis regarding the question of witchcraft is introduced in late eighteenth century Salem, a town ruled by a theocracy of predominantly Puritan beliefs. The dilemma first emerges when Betty, the daughter of Reverend Parris, the minister of Salem, is in almost a persistent vegetative state after having danced in the forest with Abigail Williams, Parris’s niece, and other girls within the
Abigail had to deal with suffering at a young age, when her parents were brutally murdered in front of her by Native Americans. The death of parents is stressful, more so when you are such a tender age. What happened to Abigail was so stressful that she had a mental breakdown. Abigail developed a sociopathic disorder, from not being able to handle the amount of suffer and stress she had. This suffering caused Abigail to make horrible decisions, she had a relationship with a married man and accused people of being witches.
Abigail and the society itself are to blame for the events in Salem causing murder and outrage in this town. Abigail is the character mainly to blame for the outrage in Salem. She is a liar, double faced hypocrite that will stop at nothing to get herself out of the mess that she created. Making her one of the main killers of these innocent puritan people.
Abigail’s felling for John started the event known as the Salem Witch
She is the most to blame for the actions made and the deaths that took place in Salem. The affair John and Abigail had caused her to fall hard for him. She has it set in her mind that she will go to unbelievable measures to try and get Elizabeth Proctor out of the picture so she can be with John. Abigail is found dancing in the woods with the other girls at night.
She accuses all of the wives in the village basically, she also shouts names of random people and says that they are capable of witchcraft. Need I remind you that these are innocent women that she is putting all of the blame on, but for what? To save herself, if she as innocent as she claims to be then there should be no need for cover ups. She also lied about Mary Warren being a bird that was apparently attacking her and the girls. She was a very manipulative girl throughout the whole trial, she accused many and lied about a lot.
