As life goes on, we learn that there are many struggles that we go through that change us for better or for worse. In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, a series of witch trials occur in the town of Salem and innocent people get accused and executed, but throughout the trials, many characters develop into something unexpected. A crucible is a container that can withstand heat and it shows the impurities of a metal. This is significant because the true characters of many people in Salem are revealed. Throughout The Crucible John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Giles Corey are all pushed to their boiling point as they go through the trials. Although John Proctor is one of the most respected men in Salem, nobody knows that John Proctor had an affair on his wife Elizabeth. Not only can Elizabeth not forgive him, but he has trouble forgiving himself. John has to confess his sin but he struggles doing so out of fear of losing his reputation. Later on John proctor confesses to witch craft to protect his wife who was accused of witchery. She had a cheating husband whom she had trouble forgiving and she was accused for something she had no part of. When John confesses his affair to the court he says Elizabeth will never tell a lie. Later the court asks Elizabeth if John Had an affair and Elizabeth lies to protect her husbands reputation, “it is a natural lie to tell”. Telling the truth would mean redemption, but Elizabeth chose a lie to protect her husband. Before John dies, Elizabeth tells him it was her fault he had an affair because she was not being a good enough wife and she asked John to forgive himself.
