Salmon are fish swim upstream to spawn: they are born in fresh water, migrate to the ocean, then return to fresh water to reproduce. “The salmon run” is the time when salmon have migrated from the ocean, swim to the upper reaches of rivers where they spawn on gravel beds. Salmon can make amazing journeys, sometimes they can move hundreds of miles upstream against strong currents. Most salmon species migrate during the fall (September through November). Salmon spend their early life in rivers, and then they swim out to sea where they live their adult lives. When salmon have matured, they return to the rivers to spawn.
