Perseverance is a strong character trait to have. It can be very helpful throughout a story and empowers the character by giving them strength. Parks' decision to give Salva perseverance was a great idea for the story. Perseverance had helped him tremendously throughout Africa during the war. It was the voice in his head telling him not to give up that he hung on to. Luck is another one of the survival factors that helped Salva survive. Though he was not lucky to be a refugee, he was one of the lucky ones who managed to survive the war. Salva had to leave home from war and was walking across the desert with a group of other refugee strangers. He didn’t know where any of his family was when he saw his uncle and got really excited. Which is really bad; Salva is only a young boy and needs help. And now he has a family member, his uncle, who can help him throughout their journey and also might have information about where his family is. Most other refugees were not as lucky, had no family to help them, and most likely died. Salva’s uncle ends up helping him and keeping him alive; just think about what would have happened if he had not found his uncle. He would not have made it through the war, which is why he was so lucky to have found an uncle. Salva has been staying at this refugee camp for a while, and then people begin to start sending a few selected people to go to America and put lists up with the names of the chosen ones. After a bit, Salva ends up getting picked to go! Park says,“ Salva was going to New York. He was going to America!” (Park, 89). This shows how lucky Salva is to have been chosen because there were millions of people in that camp, and it was very hard to get picked. Plus, even if you got picked, you might not have passed the interview. If Salva had not been picked, he most likely would have stayed and lived in the camp forever and died from not getting enough
