Salvage The Bones(2011) written by Jesmyn Ward details a Family from a Mississippi Gulf town, Boi Sauvage, going through 12 days leading up to and facing hurricane Katrina. Esch, the protagonist, is infatuated with Manny who wants nothing to do with her, even if she is carrying his baby. After telling Manny of the baby in her womb she faces rejection from the man she desires most. This passage explores Eschs reaction to rejection and foreshadows her eventual acceptance of the journey of motherhood without the father and man she loves, Manny. Esch has been infatuated with Manny ever since she first slept with him. She saw him in a different light, he was her heaven on earth until he wasn't. Ward uses strong adjectives to allude to the turning point and importance of this passage. Manny has always written off Esch, this time she believed that things would be different because of his baby she's carrying inside her. After rejection Esch believes that what she carries in her “stomach is relentless” (205) because it is a direct parallel to what could have been with Manny if he just loved her. The word “relentless” is a hard and strong adjective, the connotation with relentless being a “strong” and descriptive adjective and not just a “weak” adjective directly correlates to her strong and deep rooted feelings towards Manny. Esch loves Manny deeply but with the strong adjective placed into this passage Ward reveals to the reader the turning point of her infatuation. Ward uses strong adjectives to reveal to the reader the shift that occurs in this passage of Esch’s feelings towards Manny. Esch knows that Manny doesn't love her or their baby and feeling this “each unbearable day” has worn her down. The use of unbearable in this passage suggests that Esch has finally come to terms with the truth: Manny doesn't and won't ever love her. Esch can still be in pain and hurt but acceptance and pain can be synchronous. The word choice reveals the pain behind the acceptance of Manny and the turning point that just occurred. Esch knows that Manny doesn't love her, she just wants him to love her so bad she will kill herself trying to gain even a little attention from Manny. Esch’s infatuation with Manny has come to a turning point where he must finally accept her or she must let him walk away from her and the baby of his that's inside her womb.
