Sam Spade Search The Office Chapter Summaries

The book starts off in Sam Spade and Miles Archer’s office on December 5, 1928, in San Francisco, California. Sam’s secretary Effie Perine tells Sam about a new client they have named Miss Wonderly. Miss Wonderly is a tall and slender woman who wears a specific shade of blue to bring out the color in her eyes. She asked Spade to help her find her sister Corrine, who supposedly ran away with a person named Floyd Thursby. Miss Wonderly walks in and continues telling her story. Spade agrees to follow them. Miss Wonderly says she will give both Spade and Archer a total of $200. Chapter Two starts off with a telephone call from an unknown caller and the call is about a dead person. Spade denies having the bird and Cairo holds Spade at gunpoint insisting that he is going to search the office. While searching the office he checks Spade for weapons and Spade elbows Cairo in the face and knocks him unconscious. While Cairo is unconcious Spade searches him and finds a clipping from a newspaper that has Archer and Thursby’s murders on it. When Cairo finally awakens he is interrogated by Spade. Cairo then offers Spade $5000 for the bird again and Spade agrees on the offer. Spade then heads out to dinner and when he does he notices a kid following him. He looks for Cairo and when he finds him he asks him if he knows the kid and Cairo says no. Spade then leaves to go to Brigid and the kid is still following him.
