“I pledge my head to clearer thinking, My heart to greater loyalty, My hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.” The 4H Pledge is a saying that I only recently became familiar with, but very quickly memorized. Growing up, I had heard a lot of talk about 4H -especially 4H camp- but had only really known it as an organization that likes to talk about livestock and agriculture, which I decided was not for me and I put it out of my mind. The event wasn’t anything too special, but for some reason I still came back the next month, and the following months after that. A few months pass by and I start to hear talk about another 4H event coming up called Teen Conference. This event was going to be completely different as Teen Conference is an actual conference where you go for 3 days and stay the night on UK’s campus. This would be the first time I had ever experienced anything like this and struck my curiosity. Once again Delanay invited me to go and once again I went. I had a lot of fun at the conference and enjoyed meeting new people but still didn’t understand the uproar with 4H, and yet again I still -for some reason I don’t know- stayed involved. Yet another month passes and talk of another 4H event is being stirred up, only this time it’s one of the biggest events 4H puts on, 4H camp. Camp is a place where elementary and middle school kids go to have fun and learn how to be independent people while still helping others.
