I wish to be an ALT as part of the Jet program. While I was tutoring children during my time in college, I enjoyed the experience of working with students. It was great to see a student, with my assistance, be able to understand a problem and solve it. I want to have this kind of experience in Japan. With energetic and enthusiastic teaching, I will be able to bring out the best in my students. I believe that language and culture are the door to understanding. Things that are foreign to one can be fearful and intimidating. When one can come to understand the unknown, it becomes benign and inviting. It is my hope that through this mutual understanding that I can help my students open doors to new places and experiences like my Japanese language teachers did for me. I would enjoy participating in extracurricular activities. I also enjoy athletics and would love to participate in some sort of local club. My participation in multiple tutoring programs for young students in Philadelphia schools will be a great asset for the JET program. During this time, I learned how to engage students so that they will be able to think through problems. One of the most important things I learned in my studies at university is that learning is not solely about gaining knowledge, but learning how to think. Memorized facts are eventually lost through time, but the ability to think critically is retained forever. This is something that I will pass on to my students.
