When the book started and Lily gave her age I thought “Wow she’s about my age this is going to be a somewhat relatable story”. Soon throughout the book I realized that Lily had some tough situations she had to deal with alone. Especially in this time period things were very different to how they are now in many ways. Lily was always beaten down and sbused by her father and she never saw him as a real father. Losing a parent is very difficult especially your mother. Knowing that you killed your mother either meaning to or not is a heavy burden to live with. I couldn’t imagine the pain and internal struggle she must go through. It made Lily think about the positives and negatives and that she had people to relate and connect with. She shows Lily her love and support by treating her like her own daughter. Rosaleen cares very much for Lily and knows whats importnat to her like her birthday. Having someone who supports you after seing your won parent dislike and mistreat you is a relief. I could see that Liliy was waiting for someone like Rosaleen to come along and give her a push to take a risk. Lily finds her spark of indepence when she witnesses Rosaleen beaten and imprisoned. She learns to lie and plan an escape to Tilburon defying her father and leaving home where she was never wanted. She uses her intellegence to create a false past, learned a new set of skilss, and reflect on events and people around her. She ends up finding the courage to stand up to her father once and for all. Lily doesn’t know how racism is a fact in South Carolina and that danger becomes part of her education. Going into the world without outside knowlege probably wasn’t the smartest or safest thing to do. She learns from her father, the tv and the incident revolving
