International Figure Speech
Interviewer Hello, and welcome to our program today we have a special visitor named Alexander Crummell. He is known as the first black student to earn a degree from the University of Cambridge. Crummell spends a lot of his time advocating for Liberia and standing up for black education. We will be discussing the college acceptance rates of African Americans. Including colleges reasons for not accepting, colleges changing, special programs, and colorblind methods.
Interviewer Our first question for Mr.Crummell today is why do you think colleges don’t accept as many African Americans as whites?

Special programs have been tried at high school levels such as one in Oakland California. In California they made the African American Male Achievement program(AAMA). This program looks at African American history, runs career academies, leadership counselors, and has role models from the community. This greatly helped the schools the amount of black student graduation rose by six percent and the suspensions of black kids decreased by one-third in their school. This is one example of how one program can greatly improve things. Also these programs might help the students feel belonging and value in their college. For just as Shaun Harper said “Even at places that are impressively diverse, students still feel very much on fringes”. I feel that if colleges offer these programs the kids should have the choice of if they want to take part in it or not. I also think special programs in not just colleges but in high school as well are a good idea. I would be very beneficial if in high schools started having programs for African Americans to look at their future and help prepare them for college. The first thing I think of is in 1954 when the US Supreme Court, in the Brown vs Board of Education, ruled that the separate but equal law violated the constitution. But now just recently on June, 23, 2016, the US Supreme Court upholding the Affirmative Action Program. Which makes me happy because we are moving toward equality. The color blind methods which are where colleges try to not use race as a factor for acceptance. This is really good because the colleges aren’t judging on the color of our skin but instead our actual capabilities. On the other side the color blind methods seriously frustrate me. They make me mad because it shows that American people still can’t have equality in their heart, and they have to pretend. These color blind methods are a great step ahead but I’m hoping that eventually when colleges look at a black college applicant they wouldn’t think any differently than if they were looking at a white
