To me, the Nursing profession is an intersection of two gifts I have been given: the ability to think scientifically and the ability to relate well with others by showing empathy. This first gift, a scientific mind, shows through my interests in biology and the human body. This fascination has only grown as I have started learning more in my classes at Bethel. The second gift, empathy, is evidenced by my experience of having two siblings with significant disabilities. These two gifts manifest themselves in the role a nurse plays in patient care. I want to be a nurse because denying these gifts God has so clearly given to me would mean ignoring His calling on my life.

This specific lecture was about the osteon, the basic unit of bone. During this lecture, as well as others, I was overwhelmed with the intricate detail God has put into creating each one of us. Because of that moment, I realized I never want to stop discovering our Creator’s endless creativity. Now, waking up for a 7:40 Anatomy class is extra special to me, as it puts me in a place of wonder and worship.
When I consider my nursing education, I truly cannot think of another program that offers what Bethel University’s nursing department offers. Bethel’s program is prestigious and well-known by employers throughout the state. This program equips its graduates to not only be exceptional nurses, but also to be the hands and feet of Christ in this world by preparing students for Christ-like nursing practice. During the past four summers I have worked at Camp Lebanon, including working as part of the counseling team for the past two summers. I had the privilege and responsibility to lead a cabin of ten girls each week, pointing them to and showing them the love of Christ. I am excited to return to Camp Lebanon again this summer to supervise the high school staff. Additionally, during my junior and senior years of high school, I was a member of the Culture and Climate Equity Team, a small group of diverse student leaders at my school. During monthly meetings, we created dialogue about the inequities visible in our school, working toward solving conflict while maintaining respect for diverse cultures. Both of these experiences helped me gain skills in being a compassionate and empathetic
