History Walmart was founded in 1962 in Bentonville, Arkansas by Sam Walton. Sam’s vison was to open a retail store with the simple motto of “the lowest prices anytime, anywhere”. (Walmart, 2015a) Sam wanted to live by that motto and in doing so kept his prices lower than his competitors by reducing his profit margin. Even though when he first started he wasn’t making the same profit as the other stores, he was getting more customers in the door and that lead to more repeat customers. Their primary operation is the retail industry with the brand Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Express Stores. The company’s current CEO is C. Douglas McMillon. In doing the research for this paper I found that their CEO started out as a summer bagger in one of their stores. In his profile it says that “Doug is a longtime champion of Walmart’s customers, its associates and the company’s culture. In 1984, he started out as an hourly summer associate in a Walmart distribution center. In 1990, while pursuing his MBA, he rejoined the company as an assistant manager in a Tulsa, Okla., Walmart store before moving to merchandising as a buyer trainee. He went on to serve in successful senior leadership roles in all of Walmart’s business segments.” (Walmart, 2015c, para. 3) The number of employees that they employ is astonishing and it has been noted that they employ about 1% of the United States of America. According to their website they note that they operate over 11,000 retail units under 65 banners in 28 countries. They employ 2.2 million associates around the world — 1.3 million in the U.S. alone.
