Kenny and Claire Sparks are a working-class couple living in Dayton, Texas. The Sparks have been trying to have a child for seven years, when they finally conceive, Claire automatically knows she is having a boy and names him Landon. On October 23rd 1988 when Claire was just six months pregnant when she started bleeding causing Landon to be born ten weeks early and weigh only 3lbs 5oz. Kenny visits Landon before he is airlifted to Hermann hospital when he notices a mass on his spine and know his son will not survive. Kenny is told about the life Landon will have if he survived the 2 pronged surgeries which given the severity of the lesion would be lifeless and bedridden anyway.
The accused, Wendell Clayton, was found in possession of a loaded illegal handgun which is banned under Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46. A caller inside the coffee time store called 911 at about 1:22 reporting that there were around 10 black guys in the parking lot of The Million Dollar store, a strip club, across the street from him. The caller reported that certain individuals, 4 of the 10 black guys had guns on them and were openly displaying their handguns in the middle of the parking lot. Police immediately responded and within minutes the officers set up a roadblock in front of the exits to the location. SSGT Joseph White came into the local VA Community based clinic for medical care. When he was discussing his situation at home, the medical doctor found that it would beneficial that the social worker talk with SSGT White. The social worker obtained an appropriate assessment to assist with finding services that would be available to him through the VA and/or local community organizations for his symptoms and treatment options. When establishing a relationship with a potential client, building and keeping a rapport with the individual is key to a positive working relationship. The individual needs to feel that they are respected, understood, and listened to when the relationship begins.
In Michael K. Honey 's book Southern Labor and Black Civil Rights: Organizing Memphis Workers, Honey analyzes the various labor movements that occurred throughout Memphis, Tennessee in the 1930 's, 40 's, and 50 's. Throughout his book, we are introduced to key players such as "Boss" Ed Crump, the bias police, the AFL, George Bass, Thomas Watkins, and other organizers, and possibly the most important to the labor movement, the CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizers). Memphis acts as the backdrop of the war between labor rights and traditional, Southern labor standards. Briefly describe the 1984 case of Denice Haraway. Describe the Ada police mistreatment of Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot with regard to the case. Make connections to the Ada police mistreatment of Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz. Denice Haraway was at a local convenience store, where she was assumed to be kidnapped with no traceable evidence. Haraway’s body was never found nor was it proven she was kidnapped supporting her disappearance.
In the “Mis-Education of the Negro” (Woodson, C.G., 1933), Carter G. Woodson, the founder of the black history movement, argues that many of the black spiritual leaders of the church have led the people astray. He suggests that far too many pastors of institution of spiritual uplift are manipulating the people for their own self-centered gains. Moreover, that their interest is only to benefit themselves.
In February of 2007 Heather Andrea Williams published a novel titled Self-Taught: African American Education in Slavery and Freedom. In chapter six, Williams specifically focuses on African-American’s teaching in freed people’s schools. Williams makes the claim that African-American’s entered the classroom as teachers, but not without some battles to overcome. I had always been taught that in some (most?) places it was illegal to teach African-Americans, more specifically slaves, to read.
Tania Covarrubias Criminal Justice 234 Tina January 30, 2018 Case Involving James Holmes Facts of the case involving James Holmes On July 20, 2012 James Holmes, murder twelve people and injured seventy people in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. On July 16, 2015, “James Holmes was found guilty on all 165 counts against him: 24 first-degree murder, 140 attempted murder and one count of possession or control of an explosive or incendiary device” (“Colorado Theater”, 2017). Holmes proposes to plead guilty to dodge the death penalty. His request was denied.
The preface talked about how Sam Patch didn’t have many records to retell his tell. Patch’s family weren’t famous they never appeared in newspapers or keep diaries. Patch never made a bibliography, but there were records such as tax lists and church records. So this made it hard to for the author to tell the beginning of Patch’s story. However, Sam Patch once became one of the first daredevils in America and became a famous celebrity there was much more evidence during his career.
The Tuskegee study of Untreated Syphilis began in 1932, mainly designed to determine the history of untreated latent syphilis on 600 African American men in Tuskegee, Alabama. 201 out of 600 men were non-syphilitic just unknowingly involved in the study as a control group This study is known to be “the most infamous biomedical research study in the U.S history”. Most of these men had never visited a doctor and they had no idea what illness they had. All of the men agreed to be a participant thinking they were being treated for “bad blood” and plus they were given free medical care and meals.
Peter Schroeder Dr. Christopher Marshall Modern United States History 2/2/17 Writing Assignment 1: The African-American Experience with Reconstruction Reconstruction among the south refers to the point in time which the United States was attempting to establish a relationship between the union and the rebels. The Union had won the civil war, so the next step was to begin to mend the broken relationship between the north and the south. Though historians cannot agree on when it began, there is merit in saying that it started before the end of the Civil War. After victory, had been solidified for the Union, attention of President Lincoln turned towards reconstruction.
Reconstruction, between 1865-1877, allowed for the South to take control and was ultimately a failure. Although Freedmen’s Bureau was helpful in providing care for the recently freed African Americans, but it ended up being a failure when it was vetoed by Andrew Johnson in 1866. The Freedmen’s Bureau was meant to provide the former slaves with the necessities of life. Andrew Johnson in disagreement with the radical republicans vetoed the bill destroying any chance for integration into society for the African Americans. The 13th amendment was a success because it allowed African Americans to be freed from the bonds of slavery, but it did not allow for healthy integration into to everyday society.
Reconstruction is the time period after the Civil War, where the country attempted to improve the Union. There were many successes, but what also comes along with success is failure. During the reconstruction many failures were present; such as the lack of racial equality and blatant racism towards blacks, a failing economy in the South, and tense relations between the North and the South. This created a very intense and challenging period of time for the Union.
